Amazon Enters the Content Creation World with Living Classics Game

Amazon has made an announcement that is sure to make folks at their competitor’s offices take notice. With the announcement of a new division within Amazon (Amazon Game Studios), the retail giant has entered into the content creation world with a new game called Living Classics (available for free as a Facebook app).

Living Classics is a social game that puts the player in a world inspired by classic literature where objects from the fantasy world come to life. It’s your job to help a family of foxes that have wandered into this magical world find each other. You accomplish this by finding moving objects within several scenes inspired by classics such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and King Arthur.

So, the long-term question that immediately jumps into mind concerning this project is how Amazon might leverage its game division to drive more users to its hardware and software platforms. Kindle (and Android by association) could stand to gain quite a lot from the work of this part of Amazon. If anything, it puts Microsoft right in its crosshairs as it moves in to the gaming market, an area that Microsoft has excelled in as both a hardware and software developer.

What is beginning as a simple Facebook game could quickly grow. Amazon is no small company, and a small success here will undoubtedly pave the way for larger (and more profitable) ventures to come. It makes total sense that Amazon is testing the waters on Facebook, the largest social network in the world. This enables the studio to benefit from the built-in sharing and like functionality of Facebook, and ultimately get the word out about this new initiative without spending a bundle on development for mobile and desktop platforms.

This said, Amazon is in a hiring phase right now in this division. Do you have what it takes to develop interactive (and potentially social) games for the masses?
