How to Change App Settings in Windows 8

We pretty much all know how to change options and preferences within a traditional Windows program. Just head to the menu at the top of the screen and hit File, then Preferences or something like that. Windows 8 apps are completely different. There is no big menu at the top of the screen, and not every app keeps its options and settings in the same place.

So what can you do? The answer is pretty simple. The vast majority of Windows 8 apps keep their settings in two places. Here’s how to get to them.

Many apps have the most frequently used settings available to users through right-click. A right-click will bring up toolbars on the top and bottom of the screen, which the developer may have decided to fill with customization options.

In the Weather app, for example, a right-click reveals location settings and measurement standards. News apps may have topic or category settings here to choose from. It’s the easiest way to manage preferences, and more app developers are likely to use this method to help users with customization than any other.

Settings Menu

For more detailed settings that aren’t as easily explained in the primary window, the Settings menu is available to you. You’ll reach this window through the charms. You can get there by either typing Windows+i on your keyboard or moving your mouse to a corner of the screen on the right side and dragging it along the edge of the screen until you click Settings.

When you’re in the primary Start screen, this menu allows you to configure settings for Windows 8. When you’re in an app, the menu is customized for the app itself, allowing you to see a list of options, preferences, and settings the app’s developer wished to add there. Some apps have very little in this menu, and others have a vast array of sub-menus through which you can navigate.

This should get you started. If you have any questions about Windows 8, please leave a comment below and let us know.
