How to Sync Your iPad with Google Calendar

Google Calendar allows you to access your schedule no matter where you are or what device you’re using to connect to the Web. While its Web interface is very good, some users still prefer built-in or third-party calendar applications to manage their schedules. Thankfully, syncing Google Calendar with your iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone is fairly easy.

There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. If you have a Gmail account, here are the steps you need to take to make this happen for you:

  • Open the Settings menu on your iOS device.
  • Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars from the sidebar located on the left of the screen.
  • Select the Add Account… option located near the center of the right-hand side of the Settings menu.
  • Choose Gmail from the list.
  • Enter your information in the appropriate fields.
  • Toggle the Calendars slider to the on position. This will add the Google Calendar account associated with your Gmail account to the Calendar app.
  • Launch the Calendar app.
  • Select Calendars.
  • Toggle the Gmail calendar (or calendars) that you wish to display.

If you prefer not to set up your Gmail account and just directly sync your Google Calendar to the iPad:

  • Open the Settings menu on your iOS device.
  • Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars from the sidebar located on the left of the screen.
  • Select the Add Account… option located near the center of the right-hand side of the Settings menu.
  • Select Microsoft Exchange from the list.
  • Enter the email address associated with your Google account in the Email field.
  • Leave the Domain field blank.
  • Enter your Google account email address in the Username field.
  • Enter your Google account password in the Password field.
  • Give the account an appropriate nickname in the Description field.
  • Select Next.
  • Cancel any failed attempts to verify certificates.
  • Put m.google.com in the New Server field.
  • Select Next.
  • Choose the appropriate Google Calendar services.
  • If you want to delete your existing iPad calendars, uncheck Keep on my iPad.

That should do it; you should now have your Google Calendar show up on your iPad using the Calendar app. Once you launch the app, everything should sync up.

  • I use Google calendar with my iPad and iPhone but I have a lot of events and there’s a big lag when I open the app. I may be wrong but it feels like the data’s getting downloaded from Google and it’s not being stored on my device. I use MobileMe for my contacts and don’t get that kind of lag at all.

I’d love to find a way to import my Google calendar data into MobileMe but haven’t found a way to do it. The only solutions involve using Mac software and I’m on a PC.

I’m guessing Apple will solve this issue when they release idisk (or whatever it’s called) but if I could get it solved sooner than later that would be even better.
