iOS 5 is Finally Here

The day has finally arrived, and iOS 5 is being seeded out to various points across the globe today. Still unclear exactly what the new update brings to the table? Don’t worry, we have a walkthrough available on the LockerGnome YouTube Channel that takes you step-by-step through iOS 5 and many of its most important features.

Below is a partial list of these changes provided by Nate from NatesTechUpdate on YouTube:

Over the Air Updates — Download new software updates right on your device over Wi-Fi or 3G. These are delta updates meaning you only download the changes.

iCloud Backups — Back up your device without the use of iTunes with iCloud. iCloud backups will automatically be made whenever your device is plugged in, the screen is locked, and connected to a Wi-Fi network. Manual backups can also be made under iCloud in settings.

Wi-Fi Sync — For those still interested in using iTunes, cut the cord and sync over Wi-Fi.

Notification Center — Apple has completely redesigned notifications in iOS 5 with the new banner alert style. Notification Center can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the device. Notifications that have not been responded to will be made available here.

Camera/Photo Updates — Turn on/off grid, take photo with volume up button, lock auto focus and auto exposure, and camera button on lock screen. Edit photos by rotating, auto-enhancing, and correcting red eye.

Twitter — iOS 5 has Twitter built right in. Tweet Web pages, videos, and photos.

iMessage — Communicate between Apple devices running iOS 5 with added benefits. Receive delivery confirmations and see when recipients are typing.

Safari Updates — Tabbed browsing, reader, reading list.

iPad Gestures — Apple has updated multi-touch gestures for the iPad, giving you more functionality.

iPad Keyboard Split — A split keyboard makes it easier to type with your thumbs or simply see your entire screen while typing.

Reminders — Quickly create reminders that can be set with date and location information.

Newsstand – Access to subscriptions with automatic downloads of new issues.

Apple’s iOS 5 is expected to be available through iTunes on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. If this version is released along the same time frame as previous ones, it will likely be made available around 10:00am PST / 18:00 London. Supported devices include: iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S / iPad and iPad 2 / iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation.
